Warning against Misleading Innovation

Shaykh ‘Alee al-Hudhayfee    29, Safar 1426 (8, April 2005)

All praise is due to Allaah, Lord of all the worlds.

Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger, his household and companions.

Fellow Muslims! Fear Allaah as He should be feared and obey Him. It is by fear of Allaah that affairs can be set aright and happiness be attained.

It is through fear of Allaah that one can have happy ending in this world and the Hereafter.

Allaah says,

“That home of the Hereafter (i.e. Paradise), We shall assign to those who rebel not against the truth with pride and oppression in the land nor do mischief by committing crimes. And the good end is for the pious.” (Al-Qasas 28:83)

Brethren in Islaam! The greatest favour that Allaah bestowed upon His servants is the religion of Islaam that distinguishes between truth and falsehood, between good and evil and between guidance and error.

Allaah says,

“Is he who was dead (without Faith by ignorance and disbelief) and We gave him life (by knowledge and Faith) and set for him a light (of Belief) whereby he can walk amongst men – like him who is in the darkness (of disbelief, polytheism and hypocrisy) from which he can never come out?” (Al-An‘aam 6:122)

One of the major things that expose the religion of Islaam to dangers is the emergence of misleading innovations. Though the proponents of these innovations believe that they are on the right path, there is no doubt that they are erroneous. It is ignorance that breeds misleading innovations.

Allaah says,

“But most of them behave ignorantly.” (Al-An‘aam 6:111)

Allaah also says,

“And if you obey most of those on the earth, they will mislead you far away from Allaah’s Path. They follow nothing but conjectures, and they do nothing but lie.” (Al-An‘aam 6:111)

The following are the causes of misleading innovations:

One: Desire

Allaah says,

“And who is more astray than one who follows his own lusts, without guidance from Allaah? Verily Allaah guides not the people who are Zâlimûn (wrong-doers, disobedient to Allaah, and polytheists).” (Al-Qasas 28:50)

Two: Evil intention

Allaah says,

“I shall turn away from My Ayât (verses of the Qur’aan) those who behave arrogantly on the earth, without a right, and (even) if they see all the Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they will not believe in them. And if they see the way of righteousness (monotheism, piety, and good deeds), they will not adopt it as the Way, but if they see the way of error (polytheism, crimes and evil deeds), they will adopt that way.” (Al-A‘raaf 7:146)

Three: Turning away from learning the truth and acting upon it

Allaah says,

“Then if there comes to you guidance from Me, then whoever follows My Guidance he shall neither go astray, nor shall be distressed. “But whosoever turns away from My Reminder (i.e. neither believes in this Qur’ân nor acts on its teachings.) verily, for him is a life of hardship, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection.”” (Taa Haa 20:123-124)

Allaah also says,

“And who does more wrong than he who is reminded of the Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of his Lord, then he turns aside therefrom? Verily, We shall exact retribution from the Mujrimûn (criminals, disbelievers, polytheists, sinners).” (As-Sajdah 32:22)

Four: Self-importance

Allaah says,

“Is he, then, to whom the evil of his deeds is made fair-seeming, so that he considers it as good (equal to one who is rightly guided)? Verily, Allaah sends astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. So destroy not yourself (O Muhammad) in sorrow for them.” (Faatir 35:8)

In the hadeeth, Allaah’s Messenger said,

“When you see niggardliness being obeyed, passion being followed, and worldly interests being preferred, everyone being charmed with his opinion, then care for yourself.” (Aboo Daawood)

Five: Keeping away from knowledgeable people and failing to ask them matters of religion

Allaah says,

“So ask people of dhikr if you do not know.” (An-Nahl 16:43)

When all the above causes are found together, causes of misery and perdition are definitely there, except if Allaah bestows His favour through a saving repentance.

Innovations had appeared during the later part of the generation of the Prophet’s Companions. And they relentlessly fought these innovations through explanations and establishment of proofs until they disappeared and their darkness was removed. They fulfilled their obligations in warning the ummah against it.

Towards the end of Umar’s caliphate, the innovation of the qadariyyah and the khawaarij surfaced. And then different kinds of innovations followed one another. But at all times, Allaah appoints among the Muslims leaders and scholars who extinguish the fire of crises and innovations.

The rulers suppress the innovations and extinguish their fire with the force of authority and the scholars do so with the force of enlightenment and clarification.

They spread the Sunnah, convey the religious rules and warn the Ummah from being influenced by the advocates of innovations and commotions.

They do so in emulation of the Prophet who used to warn his followers against innovations and crises. He said,

“It was the duty of every Prophet that has gone before me to guide his followers to what he knew was good for them and warn them against what he knew was bad for them; but this Ummah of yours has its days of peace and (security) in the beginning of its career, and in the last phase of its existence it will be afflicted with trials and with things disagreeable to you. (In this phase of the Ummah), there will be tremendous trials one after the other, each making the previous one dwindle into insignificance. When they would be afflicted with a trial, the believer would say: This is going to bring about my destruction. When at (the trial) is over, they would be afflicted with another trial, and the believer would say: This surely is going to be my end. Whoever wishes to be delivered from the fire and enter the garden should die with faith in Allaah and the Last Day and should treat the people as he wishes to be treated by them. He who swears allegiance to a Caliph should give him the pledge of his hand and the sincerity of his heart (i.e. submit to him both outwardly as well as inwardly). He should obey him to the best of his capacity. It another man comes forward (as a claimant to Caliphate), disputing his authority, they (the Muslims) should behead the latter.” (Muslim)

The Messenger of Allaah also said,

“There are days of trials behind you in which there will be a lot of money, and the Qur’aan will be opened [will be so accessible to all] that the believer and the hypocrite, the man and the woman, the freeman and the bondsman, the young and the old will take hold of it. And someone will say: ‘why are people not following me though I read the Qur’aan [to them]. And they will not follow me until I invent for them a book different from the Qur’aan.’ Indeed, he who invents anything [different from what I have brought] has invented an error.” (Aboo Daawood)

The Prophet also said,

Whoever takes up arms against us is not of us.” (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

And he said,

“Abusing a Muslim is an act of sinfulness and fighting him is an act of disbelief.” (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

Fellow Muslims! There are some people who cannot endure seeing Allaah’s favour [on others]. You see them fighting this favour with their deeds, thereby harming themselves and harming others. Allaah says,

“Have they not seen that We have made (Makkah) a secure sanctuary, while men are being snatched away from all around them? Then do they believe in Bâtil (falsehood – polytheism, idols and all deities other than Allaah), and deny (become ingrate for) the Graces of Allaah?” (Al-‘Ankaboot 29:67)

Dear brethren! Security is a great blessing from Allaah through which the benefits of this world and those of the Hereafter are achieved. It is therefore, our obligation to thank Allaah and worship Him for this blessing. It is the right of this security to be preserved by each and every member of the society.

Allaah says,

“So let them worship (Allaah) the Lord of this House (the Ka’bah in Makkah). (He) Who has fed them against hunger, and has made them safe from fear.” (Quraysh 106:3-4)

And He says,

“And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed: “If you give thanks (by accepting Faith and worshipping none but Allaah), I will give you more (of My Blessings); but if you are thankless (i.e. disbelievers), verily My Punishment is indeed severe.”” (Ibraaheem 14:7)

The Messenger of Allaah said,

“Whoever wakes up in the morning safe in his self, healthy in his body and having his daily bread, it is as if the whole world and all that is in it is put in his possession.” (At-Tirmidhee)

Talhah ibn ‘Ubaydullaah narrated that whenever the Prophet saw new moon he would say,

“O Allaah, let it be a moon of security, faith, peace and Islaam. My Lord and your Lord is Allaah.” (At-Tirmidhee)

I implore those who are revolting against the community of the Muslims and their leaders to fear Allaah. Let them ponder over these terrorist and destructive actions that had created much corruption and tarnished the image of Islaam.

The religion of Islaam has nothing to do with all this. Those who perpetrate this crime only kill themselves or kill other innocent Muslims or kill no-Muslims, who live under the protection of the Muslim state, defying the command of Allaah,

“And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allaah is Most Merciful to you.” (An-Nisaa 4:29)

And His saying,

“And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell to abide therein; and the Wrath and the Curse of Allaah are upon him, and a great punishment is prepared for him.” (An-Nisaa 4:93)

They also sabotage private and public properties, frighten protected people and spread horror in the society. All these are darkness upon darkness and multiple major sins.

If any of the perpetrators had reflected over one of these crimes it would have been enough to scare him away from this evil and perverted ideology.

We are therefore calling upon them to surrender themselves to the authorities. That is the only right way. They also need to return to Allaah in repentance from this mischievous act, for whoever repents to Allaah, He accepts his repentance and forgive him.

Allaah says,

“The recompense of those who wage war against Allaah and His Messenger and do mischief in the land is only that they shall be killed or crucified or their hands and their feet be cut off from opposite sides, or be exiled from the land.

That is their disgrace in this world, and a great torment is theirs in the Hereafter. Except for those who (having fled away and then) came back (as Muslims) with repentance before they fall into your power; in that case, know that Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Al-Maaidah 5:33-34)

May Allaah protect us against misleading crises. It is surprising how Satan was able to mislead these individuals who see mischief as reform, evil as good and falsehood as truth, thereby committing deeds of the people of Hell.

Allaah says,

“And whomsoever Allaah wants to put in Al-Fitnah (error, because of his rejecting of Faith), you can do nothing for him against Allaah.” (Al-Maaidah 5:41)

Fellow Muslims! Fear Allaah and obey Him. Obeying Him is the most upright way. Hold fast unto the strong handhold of Islaam.

Dear brethren! The misleading innovations harm the Muslim in his religion as lusts of misguidance also harm him. This makes forbidden things accumulating in his heart until the light of faith is extinguished from the heart.

Allaah says,

“Then, there has succeeded them a posterity who have given up As-Salât (the prayers) (i.e. made their Salât (prayers) to be lost, either by not offering them or by not offering them perfectly or by not offering them in their proper fixed times) and have followed lusts. So they will be thrown in Hell.” (Maryam 19:59)

Unlawful lusts are poison to the heart and the body. So beware of giving Satan leverages which are means of ambiguities and lusts.

Seek protection with patience against lusts and with certainty against ambiguities. Allaah says,

“And We made from among them (Children of Israel), leaders, giving guidance under Our Command, when they were patient and used to believe with certainty in Our Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.).” (As-Sajdah 32:24)

And He says,

This is of the news of the Unseen which We reveal unto you (O Muhammad (peace be upon him)) neither you nor your people knew it before this. So be patient. Surely, the (good) end is for the pious.” (Hood 11:49)

Dear brother! Stay with the community of the Muslims and their leader, for Allaah’s support is with the community. The wolf only preys on the isolated sheep. Satan is the wolf of man.

Al-‘Irbaad ibn Saariyah narrated, “The Messenger of Allaah gave us an admonition that frightened the hearts and makes eyes shed tears. And we said, “Messenger of Allaah! It seems as if it were a farewell exhortation, so what injunction do you give us?”He then said:

I enjoin you to fear Allaah, and to hear and obey even if it be an Abyssinian slave, for those of you who live after me will see great disagreement. You must then follow my Sunnah and that of the rightly-guided successors. Hold to it and stick fast to it. Avoid novelties, for every novelty is an innovation, and every innovation is an error. ” (Aboo Daawood and at-Tirmidhee)
