Imaam al-Albani on the Reality of Abu Ruhayyam

“In order that these biased statements about some of the people of knowledge from those who are not even that (i.e. people of knowledge) do not spread further, I will say these words, hoping that they are sincerely for Allaah:

I undertook a visit to the house of the Shaikh-ul-Islaam and the Muhaddith of the lands of Shaam, the great scholar, Imaam Muhammad Naasir-ud-Deen Al-Albaanee – rahimahullaah – with the company of two noble brothers, Laafee Ash-Shatraat and Kaamil Jum’ah Al-Qashaash. This was about three and a half years ago from today’s date. So we asked him about some issues relate to Creed and Fiqh. And there occurred amongst these questions a request for an explanation of the current dispute between Dr. Muhammad Abu Ruhayyim and Shaikh ‘Alee Al-Halabee.

The answer that our Shaikh, rahimahullaah, gave was clear, lucid and strong:
“Indeed the brother ‘Alee Al-Halabee, in my opinion, is equal to one thousand and one of the likes of Abu Ruhayyim.”

Then he said: “Strange the affair of these people. The one whom you strive to meet with, he runs away from you. And the one who you do not strive to meet with, he comes to you and pesters you.”
Then he said: “I said to Abu Ruhayyim: ‘If your ‘Aqeedah (Creed) is the same as the Creed of the three Shaikhs whom you defend – and they are Ibn Baaz, Ibn ‘Uthaimeen and Al-Albaanee – then the ‘Aqeedah of brother ‘Alee is the same as their ‘Aqeedah. And if your ‘Aqeedah is contrary to that of brother ‘Alee, then I am prepared to sit with you despite the short time we have.’ And until this moment I have not received any response from Dr. Abu Ruhayyim.”

Allaah is witness to what we say, and we do not say this except for the purpose of speaking a word that is true and just, because some people have begun to attack him and raise those who are less than him.
And we are not trying to argue and prove the status of Shaikh ‘Alee with respect to our Shaikh Al-Albaanee, for he was one of his esteemed companions, one of his close brothers, and one of his beloved students. And these books of his[1] and tapes of his gatherings[2] are the greatest proof of this. Allaah alone is the One who grants success. And we do not say this except to realize the truth and cancel out the falsehood. And the last of our calls is Al-Hamdulillaahi Rabbil-‘Alameen.

[2] A noble brother, Ahmad Ibn Saalih Az-Zahraanee posted a message on the As-Sahab MessageBoard over the Internet on 2/5/2001 entitled: “Abul-Haarith, since the very start I felt the jealousy!!”

He wrote in it: “Yes, jealousy and not happiness. So we say why? Because of the strong love that I saw and heard from Shaikh Naasir-ud-Deen Al-Albaanee, rahimahullaah, towards you and his reliance in you and his closeness to you. Allaahu Akbar!
By Allaah, the Shaikh would not speak on an issue nor would you be able to hear a gathering except that you would constantly hear: ‘Where is Abul-Haarith?’, ‘Let us hear Abul-Haarith’, ‘Yes O Abul-Haarith’, ‘What do you have (to say) O Abul-Haarith?’, ‘It looks as if Abul-Haarith wants to comment’, ‘…Is it not so, O Aul-Haarith?’ So I say: Congratulations to you O Abul-Haarith and how blessed this closeness and this knowledge is, O Abul-Haarith. If only I had your position, that would be better than the whole worldly life taken away from me.
Whenever I hear these gatherings (on tape), I automatically remember the claim that Al-Halabee is not from the students of Al-Albaanee, and that he is such and such and that he is so and so!! So I laugh and say: What proof is greater than this? Rather I say: This is proof of Shaikh Al-Albaanee’s strong attachment, closeness and trust in Abul-Haarith. In fact, what I have gathered from these tapes is that Abul-Haarith was given knowledge and blessed in it, for he was quick-witted in responding in the gatherings of the Shaikh about information that only someone who is well-informed is able to do. In general…do not think that I am jealous of you! I am just describing the condition of some – but not all – of those who attack you. So my greetings to you and to all my brothers in the Al-Albaanee School.”


The Scholars’ Praise for Him:
Many scholars have praised him, such as:

The Muhaddith, Shaykh Muhammad Naasir-ud-Deen Al-Albaanee (Rahimahullaah), who while exposing the slander of the opponent of the Sunnah, Hasaan ‘Abdul-Manaan in his book “As-Saheehah” (2/720), said:
“And going to lengths in exposing his erroneous words in declaring all of these ahaadeeth to be weak – this requires that a book be written specifically for that purpose. But my time does not permit me to engage in such projects like this, so perhaps one of our brothers who are strong in this knowledge can fulfil this task, such as the brother ‘Alee Al-Halabee.”

Also refer to the Shaykh’s introduction to his book “At-Ta’aleeqaat ar-Raddiyyah ‘alaa ar-Rawdat an-Nadiyyah” and “Adaab Az-Zafaaf”, printed by Al-Maktabah Al-Islaamiyyah, and also his book “An-Naseehah.”

Shaykh Ibn Baaz (Rahimahullaah) also praised him and wrote a foreword praise for his book “Innahaa Salafiyyatul-‘Aqeedah wal-Manhaj.”

On 28th Jumaada al-Aakhirah 1421H, Shaykh Muhammad Al-Bannaa stated, “Shaykh al-Albaanee is the Ibn Taimiyyah of our times, and Shaykh Ali Hasan (al-Halabee) is the Ibn Qayyim of our times, being the student of Shaykh al-Albaanee, and Shaykh Rabee’ is the Ibn Ma’een of our times, because of his knowledge of the people.”

And likewise Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Saalih Al-‘Uthaimeen and many other scholars of Saudi Arabia have praised Shaykh ‘Alee during his trip to the lands of Makkah and Madeenah, which he states in his lecture “My Trip to the Haramayn” and in the introduction to his book “At-Ta’reef wat-Tanbi’ah.”

The great scholar Shaykh Muqbil Ibn Haadee al-Waadi’ee (Rahimahullaah) was asked in his book “Tuhfatul-Mujeeb ‘alaa Asilatil-Hadhir wal-Ghareeb,” page 160: “Who are the scholars that you recommend to be referred to, read, and listened to?”
He answered: “We have mentioned this many times before, but we shall say it once more. I recommend Shaykh Naasir-ud-Deen al-Albaanee – may Allaah preserve him – and his students of knowledge like: brother ‘Alee Ibn Hasan Ibn ‘Abdul-Hameed, brother Saleem al-Hilaalee, and brother Mashhoor bin Hasan …”

He (Rahimahullaah) also said: “And after that I saw a valuable pamphlet entitled: Fiqh al-Waaqi’ baina an-Nadhariyah wat-Tatbeeq (The Fiqh of Reality between Theory and Implementation), of our brother ‘Alee Ibn Hasan Ibn ‘Abdul-Hameed; I recommend it to be bought and read, may Allaah reward him (Shaykh ‘Alee Hasan) for the good.”

Shaykh Muqbil also mentioned the aforementioned pamphlet in his book: “Gharatul-Ashritah ‘alaa Ahlij-Jahli was-Safsatah,” there he said: “This pamphlet is incomparable.”

Shaykh Wasee-Ullaah ‘Abbaas (Hafidhahullaah) said on 15 April, 2006: “Now as for the scholars of Jordan at present, especially the three that we have mentioned, Shaykh ‘Alee Ibn Hasan al-Halabee, Shaykh Mashhoor Hasan and Shaykh Saleem al-Hilaalee, then we know them very well, we have sat with them on many occasions, we have heard their statements, read their books, we know about their beliefs and creed and we know that they always call to good and to the sunnah of the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) in relation to matters of ‘Aqeedah and actions, and this is something that is well known and nobody can deny this, as this is the reality!”

He (Hafidhahullaah) also said: “So this is what I have to say about the scholars of Jordan, especially Shaykh ‘Alee al-Halabee, Shaykh Mashhoor Hasan and Shaykh Saleem al-Hilaalee. Their ‘Aqeedah is sound, their belief is correct, they are upon the correct ‘Aqeedah, they have knowledge and they greatly benefited from the tremendous treasure that Imaam al-Albaanee left for them and taught them about the hadeeth and narrations of the prophet (sallallaahu alyhi wa sallam). And they have abundant knowledge, especially in the affairs of hadeeth…”
“…And we advise you to benefit from the scholars of Jordan as they have made great efforts in trying to help establish the deen of Allaah in those lands where the da’wah is in dire need to be established. And many of the people of knowledge have mentioned the Jordanian scholars with good such as Shaykh ‘AbdulMuhsin al-‘Abbaad (hafidhahullaah) who is more than qualified to talk on this issue and he has mentioned them with good.”

Shaykh Husayn bin ‘Abdul-Azeez Aal ash-Shaykh (Imaam and Khateeb of Masjid an-Nabawi, Madeenah, and also the Judge of the large Law Court in Madeenah) was asked on 5th Rabee al-Awwal 1422, during the QSS Conference held in Chicago, Illinois, the following question:

“Respected Shaykh – may Allah reward you – what is your view on the fatwa which was issued by the Permanent Committee concerning the two books by Shaykh ‘Alee [bin Hasan al-Halabee], “at-Tahdheer” and “Saihatu Nadhir”, that they call to the madhhab of Irjaa in that action is not a condition for the perfection of Emaan, while bearing in mind that this book does not even contain any research into this matter of shart sihhah, or shart kamaal? Also has the Committee read the books of Shaykh Alee or has it sufficed with the views and studies of other people? May Allah reward you.”

The Shaykh answered:

“Firstly O brothers! Shaykh ‘Alee and the other Shaykh’s (of the Committee) are in unity and conformity. And Shaykh ‘Alee is a senior and elder brother, who is from the generality of Mashaayikh (himself) – from those who actually issued the verdict itself. And he knows them and they know him, and there exists love between him and them.
And Shaykh ‘Alee has been given – and to Allaah is all the praise – such knowledge and insight (baseerah) that allows him to actually deal with this knowledge-based matter that is between him and the Mashaayikh – and the truth of this matter is in the process of being clarified.
As for Shaykh Alee and his Shaykh, Shaykh al-Albaanee, then they are those who are upon the manhaj of the Sunnah, and no one doubts about them, that they are upon an acceptable and pleasing manhaj – and all praise is due to Allaah.
And Shaykh ‘Alee is amongst those who defend the manhaj of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah – all praise is due to Allaah. The fatwa did not state that the Shaykh is Murji’ah – Allaah forbid that it should state such a thing. Rather, it opposes Shaykh ‘Alee concerning what is in the book (of Shaykh Alee), and also contests with him concerning this matter.
And as for others who wish to extract from the contents of this fatwa that it necessitates the judgement upon Shaykh ‘Alee that he is a Murji’ah. For this I have not understood from it, and I also think that my brothers (the Mashaayikh) do not understand this either. And this (i.e. the fatwa) does not change or oppose what there is between Shaykh ‘Alee and the Mashaayikh (i.e. of love and respect). For they (the Mashaayikh of the Committee) respect him and revere him.
And Shaykh ‘Alee has written a knowledge-based reply to them “al-Ajwibat al-Mutalaa’imah ‘alaa Fatwaa al-Lajnah ad-Daa’imah”, in accordance with what the Salaf of this Ummah are upon, in that there is no one amongst us except that he is one who takes or who gives, and everyone’s saying can be accepted or rejected, except the occupant of this grave, meaning the Messenger of Allaah (sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) – as has been said by Imaam Maalik:
In all of speech is what can be accepted
And what can be rejected, save what is from the Messenger

And I consider that Shaykh ‘Alee will agree with me that the Committee did not say – as is often claimed about him (i.e. Shaykh ‘Alee) that Shaykh ‘Alee is a Murji’ah! Never! They did not say this. They only contested what is in the book! And is this type of contestation between the Salaf for anything but for the love for knowing the Sunnah, and to safeguard it? Rather, this dispute is only about a small part of the whole of the book.
The respected Shaykh ‘Abdul-Azeez Aal ash-Shaykh is amongst those who loves Shaykh ‘Alee – and I know this – and he respects him and also supplicates for him, and even after Shaykh ‘Alee met the respected Shaykh.
As for when others take this fatwa and then rejoice with it – in that which is for them – and they do not take that from it which is against them, then this is the way of Ahlul-Bid’ah.”

Shaykh, muhaddith of Madeenah, Hammaad al-Ansaaree said: “I think that ‘Alee Hasan ‘Abdul-Hameed will be the successor of shaykh Naasiruddeen al-Albaanee.” [al-Majmoo‘ fee tarjmah Hammaad al-Ansaaree, 2/598]

The senior shaykh Sa‘d al-Husayyin ( said in his risaalah “ad-Da‘wah wad-du‘aa”: “A lot of people in our time have achieved the degree of a scholar (‘aalim) and muhaddith while not studying in the islamic universities. And of the best of such people is ‘Alee ibn ‘Abdul-Hameed al-Halabee!”

Shaykh ‘Ubayd al-Jaabiree was asked a question about the fitnah between al-Halabee and the Lajnah (Permanent Committee), so he answered: “Shaykh ‘Alee al-Halabee is of our salafee brothers, known inshaa-Allaah for his right ‘aqeedah and manhaj.” [an-Naseehah as-Sareehah ilaa al-Jazaa’ir al-Jareehah, side “B”]

Shaykh al-Muhaddith of Madeenah, ‘Abdul-Muhsin al-‘Abbaad wrote in his book, some years after the fitnah between Shaykh Alee al-Halabee and the Lajnah, the following: “And I advise the students of knowledge to take knowledge in every city from those who busy themselves with spreading of knowledge, such as te students of shaykh al-Albaanee, may Allaah have mercy on him, in Jordan, who have established a markaz in his name after his death.” [Rifqan ahlus-sunnah bi ahlus-sunnah, p. 9]

About Shaykh Mashhoor (hafidhahullaah):

When shaykh Bakr Aboo Zayd (rahimahullaah) wrote taqdeem on the tahqeeq of shaykh Mashhoor of the book “al-Muwafaqaat”, he said: “How I wished to see this book, printed and examined in a befitting manner! And Allaah has eased my wish through the hands of the researcher, the ‘allaamah Mashhoor ibn Hasan Aal Salmaan.”

Shaykh Bakr Aboo Zayd has also praised ‘Alee al-Halabee in his book “Tahreef an-Nusoos”, p. 93-94.

And here a short but excellent advice of shaykh al-‘allaamah al-muhaddith ‘Abdul-Muhsin al-‘Abbaad (hafidhahullaah):


The Muhaddith of Madeenah Speaks on Shaykh ‘Ali bin Hasan al-Halabee al-Atharee…baadOnAliHasanShaykh Abu Talhah ‘Umar ibn Ibraheem Al ‘AbdurRahman (hafidhahullah) narrated:
The brothers ‘Ali Abu Haniyyah and Usamah at-Taybi, may Allah honour them and raise their stations, wrote to me as they heard the brother Amjad Salhab ask Shaykh ‘Abdul-Muhsin al-‘Abbad in his house in Madeenah: “who should we take knowledge from in the land of Sham (the Levant)?” Shaykh ‘Abdul-Muhsin al-‘Abbad (hafidhahullah) responded saying:
“Upon you is to stick to Shaykh ‘Ali Hasan in Jordan.”This was on 5/1/2009. Some of the brothers present asked: “and what of the fatwa of the Lajnat ad-Da’imah?” Shaykh ‘Abdul-Muhsin al-‘Abbad (hafidhahullah) responded saying:
“Do not be affected by that!”
العلاّمة عبد المحسن العبّادحفظه الله وقوّاه
فقد كتب إليَّ الأخوان علي أبو هنيّة، وأسامة الطّيبي -أكرمهما الله ورفع قدرهما- أنّهما سمعا الأخ أمجد سلهب وهو يسأل الشيخ عبد المحسن العباد في بيته العامر في المدينة النبويّة: «بمن تنصحنا أن نطلب العلم عليه في بلاد الشام؟»
فقال: «عليكم بعلي حسن في الأردن».

وكان ذلك في تاريخ: (5/1/2009م).

وقد نُشرت هذه الشهادة على (النت)، وزاد فيها:
وقال أحد إِخواننا: «وفتوى اللجنة الدائمة فيه؟»
فقال العبّاد: لا تؤثِّر فيه

Shaykh al-Muhaddith al-Madeenah Abdul-Muhsin al-Abbaad (hafidhahullaah) won’t be ignorant about al-irjaa’ and the murji’ah and -as it is evident from his words- about the shaykh Alee ibn Hasan al-Halabee and the Mashaayikh of the Permanent Committee.
Despite the fact, according to Major Scholars, that shaykh Alee made mistakes, this does not make him a misguided innovator of the Murjiah, out of the fold of Ahlus-Sunnah. May Allaah rectify his affairs.


Shaykh Ibraaheem ar-Ruhaylee Speaks on Shaykh ‘Ali bin Hasan al-Halabee al-Atharee…ayliOnAliHasanShaykh Ibraheem ar-Ruhayli stated:
“Shaykh ‘Ali is well-known for the Sunnah and being steadfast on it, we ask Allah to keep him firm on it.”Then Shaykh Ibraheem ar-Ruhayli stated:
“I know all the brothers: Mashhur Hasan, ‘Ali Hasan, all of them. I know them as being from Ahl us-Sunnah and from the students of knowledge from whose words and books is benefit. I know ‘Ali Hasan, his books and his striving on the Sunnah and his support for the truth.”

Abu Haniyyah also stated in his book:
On our last ‘Umrah trip, Rajab 1430 AH, we visted the noble Shaykh Ibraheem ar-Ruhayli at his home in Madeenah and there were students of knowledge from Palestine, Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi all present and our Shaykh Ibraheem praised our Shaykh ‘Ali saying:
“Shaykh ‘Ali and his brothers from the students of Shaykh al-Albani are the most virtuous students towards their Shaykh. Because due to their wisdom they were able to disseminate the knowledge of their Shaykh and grant success between him and other Shaykhs in other countries and also bring people closer to his knowledge and fiqh. They are the best who call to the Sunnah!
This was on: 15/1/2009 CE/Rajab 1430 AH.

In his book, Safahaat Baidaa’ min Hayat al-Imaam Muhammad Naasiruddeen al-Albaanee (San’aa’, Yemen: al-Maktabah al-Islamiyyah, 2001), p. 56, Shaykh ’Atiyyah Saalim mentions:
’Ali Hasan ’AbdulHameed al-Halabee al-Atharee: is the most prominent of the Shaykh’s students today and from the strongest of today’s students of knowledge—I consider him as such and I do not vouch for him over Allah. He is well-read and credible, he has nice compilations and treatises. I met him and sat with him a lot and found him sociable, easy-going, and always smiling.
He also mentions (pg. 52),
In the city of Abu Dhabi, Lu’ay bin ’Abdir-Razzaaq Naasiruddeen al-Albaanee narrated to me saying that, “I heard ’Ubaadah, Shaykh al-Albaanee’s grandson, ask his grandfather during his last months about the most virtuous two people in the science of hadeeth today. The Shaykh said, ’Ali Hasan al-Halabee and Aboo Ishaaq al-Huwaynee.’”

سئل فضيلة الشيخ العلامة المحدث مقبل بن هادي
الوادعي في كتابه «تحفة المجيب على أسئلة الحاضر
والغريب» (ص160): من هم العلماء الذين تنصحون بالرجوع
إليهم، وقراءة كتبهم وسماع أشرطتهم؟
فأجاب -رحمه الله-: «قد تكلمنا على هذا غير مرة، ولكننا
نعيد مرةً أخرى، فمنهم الشيخ ناصر الدين الألباني -حفظه
الله-، وطلبته الأفاضل مثل الأخ علي بن حسن بن
عبدالحميد، والأخ سليم الهلالي، والأخ مشهور بن حسن .
